Is a Leading International Equine Physical Therapist and Competitor

Suzanne Baker is ISBT’s head of animal ISBT-Bowen training, presenting courses in equine and canine ISBT-Bowen Therapy and is a former international three-day eventing and dressage competitor, representing Great Britain.

Suzanne achieved a degree in Chiropractic in 1991 and is a member of the McTimoney Chiropractic Association, qualified to treat both humans and animals. She moved from the UK to Hong Kong with her family in 1996 and is based at the famous Sha Tin horse racing complex.

Suzanne was invited to join the veterinary team for the Asia Games and the South East Asia Games and was also honoured to be asked to assist the veterinary team as physical therapist for the Beijing Olympics equine events.

Levels One and Two Tutor: Marie Paterson

 Marie has a Diploma in Human Bowen Therapy and is an ISBT-Canine and Equine Therapist with a successful practice in Tasmania working alongside veterinarians and from a vet practice.

Marie’s involvement in the dog world includes obedience, agility and specialty showing.

It has been a lifetime experience with animals, which inspired Marie to learn a therapy that could assist her in looking after and treating her own animals and support keeping them in peak physical condition.

That journey led her to discover ISBT-Bowen Therapy and the superb benefits it can provide to our animal companions. Marie is the first Australian to undertake the extensive teacher

Course Prerequisites:

Applicants must be dog owners or need to be experienced in canine handling

All dog vaccinations must be current.

Only quiet and placid dogs who are comfortable with strangers and other dogs should join the practical part of the course. It is the responsibility of applicants to ensure their dog will behave appropriately.

Level 1 course curriculum:

  • Theory and concepts of ISBT-Bowen Therapy
  • Canine musculo-skeletal anatomy
  • Introducing fascia
  • Veterinary terminology
  • Veterinary primary care
  • Canine behaviour and safety issues
  • Therapy practice on humans to obtain a good technique before working on dogs
  • Lumbar theory and practical
  • Mid back theory and practical
  • Shoulder theory and practical
  • Sequence use
  • After care

 Level 2 course curriculum:

  • Further ISBT-Bowen practical session on humans
  • Revise Level 1 Sequences
  • Introduction to soft tissue structures
  • Body and gait assessment
  • Signs of ill health
  • Common musculo-skeletal conditions
  • Neck theory and practical
  • Hamstrings theory and practical
  • Sacrum theory and practical
  • Sequence use

Levels 1 and 2 are very suitable for professionals, non-professionals and dog owners. Those students who wish to continue their training towards a Therapist qualification will be required to complete Levels 3 and 4 including case studies submission. They will also need to have completed Modules 1 & 2 of the ISBT Human Bowen Therapy course (or equivalent) to obtain their Therapist certificate and practising insurance. ISBT Canine therapists will be required to have a good understanding of Human Bowen Therapy.

  • Revision of Level 2
  • Advanced gait and lameness
  • Breed specific musculo-skeletal conditions
  • TMJ (Jaw) & Lymph
  • Pectorals
  • Carpals/Metacarpals
  • Obliques
  • Stifle
  • Adductors
  • Advanced neck techniques
  • Advanced shoulder techniques
  • Case studies sharing and feedback

Level 4 course curriculum:

  • Revision of Level 3
  • Advanced canine palpation and assessment
  • Therapist level rehabilitation and repair
  • Therapist level safety and handling
  • Insurance
  • Professional code of conduct
  • Case studies sharing and feedback
  • Written exam
